Grass around your pond enhances the appearance of a natural landscape and helps with soil erosion and food for beneficial insects and wildlife. When choosing grasses, one has to keep in mind that only certain type of grasses will do well or tolerate the type of wet soil found around the edges of a pond. Certain ornamental species like sea wood oats, sedge and oats will do well in water gardens.

Reed plants are tall grass like plants that do well in wet locations. Cattails and Horsetails are some of the common grass like reeds that can be found in USDA zones 2-12. Reeds enjoy the sun and they naturally attract birds but should be managed as they can become a pest species.
