Filtration Systems
One of the key factors in keeping a healthy and beautiful water garden is to maintain the quality of the water for plants and fish alike. Many pond enthusiasts rush to add plants and fish without taking into consideration the ecosystem of a water garden. This can be accomplished with filtration systems that remove floating waste and through biological filtration, where water goes through a process that allows for healthy bacteria to develop to deal with biological waste.
These are easy to use filters that usually come in an unit containing a sponge or mat that traps debris from the pond inside the filter. They require regular cleaning as the debris accumulates inside the filter and must be removed for optimal performance. Some filters have additional compartments that allows the filter to host nitrosomonas and nitrobacter in its fiber matting media, which breaks down ammonia into nitrate and greatly benefits ponds with fish. Filters should run continuously all year round as turning them off will kill the bacteria colony necessary for biological filtration.
Algae
Algae can become a nuisance if not managed correctly. The most effective way to handle this problem is using barley straw or pellets by placing it in the pond to prevent algae from growing. A good filtering system and water movement will keep the algae problem to a minimum.
Pond surface
One should remove decaying leaves, flowers and excess plant growth. One should strive to keep at least 50% if the pond water surface from being covered by plants or debris. Make sure to dispose excess healthy plantation responsibly, as some plants found in ponds are considered invasive to several states. In autumn, covering the pond is a good idea from having too many leaves from other plants fall into your pond. Bring your tropical plants indoors if located in a colder region.
Fertilizers
Many pond plants need nutrients to thrive and they derive their their nutrition from the water. In a well balanced pond, floating plants will be darker green and healthy. Plants that come in pots or containers like water lilies and lotus need fertilizers to thrive and bloom. There are many kinds of fertilizers available in the market to place in the soil.
